History of Shady Oaks

Mr. Marvin Leonard, legendary Ft. Worth businessman, founded Shady Oaks Country Club on 1220 acres of farmland encompassing what is now the Westover Hills residential area. Interestingly, Mr. Leonard bought the property over the objections of his good friend and protégé, Ben Hogan.

At great cost, Mr. Leonard did not rest until he had the course that he envisioned. After one of the greatest earth moving projects any golf course has ever seen and the touch of golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Mr. Leonard’s vision opened in 1958. The year 2023 marked the 75th anniversary of the club.

In 2020, renovations to the golf course were completed by the Australian golf course architect firm of Ogilvy, Cocking, and Mead for the purpose of updating Mr. Leonard’s gem, and the course re-opened to rave reviews. In addition to golf, Shady Oaks boasts first class dining, tennis, fitness and related amenities.
